Why Is 5G Technology All Hype? When Is It Coming To Indian Shores?

5G or the fifth-generation network is expected 100 times faster than the fourth generation of the network. The 5G wireless technology is expected to provide high multi-Gbps, more reliability, increased availability, ultra-low latency, massive network capacity, and great experience to users.

The new technology is expected to support millions of devices per square kilometre. On the other hand, the 4G network only supports 100,000 devices.

“While 4G was a clear upgrade in technology from 3G, 5G is more focused on incremental enhancements on existing Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology thereby allowing operators to evolve their LTE networks. As telcos are deploying these enhancements on LTE; new service dimensions are opening up. This incremental approach makes the transition logical and telcos are already on the path to 5G,” a report by Deloitte said.

It is worth noting that the 5G network is expected to provide speed up to 200Gbps in the commercial space, whereas telecom operators are expected to provide 1Gbps speed, which is higher than the 4G network.

5G Network Trials In India

Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone-Idea are conducting 5G network trials from the last four to five months. These trials are supposed to end this year; however, now, telcos are looking for more time to conduct trials. The telecom operators are reportedly eyeing an extension of one year to test their networks.

The DoT has given only six months for the same, which means until November 26th, 2021. If Dot accepts the request of the telcos, the permit will be extended until November 26th, 2022. For the unaware, Reliance Jio and Airtel have started trials this year in June, but Vodafone-Idea began trials recently.

It is important to note that the Department of Telecommunication wanted to conduct a 5G auction in the first quarter of the next year, but this extension might delay the whole procedure by the end of the next year.

For the unaware, the Department of Telecommunication has allocated spectrum bands, such as 700 Mhz, 3.5 GHz, and 26 GHz airwaves to conduct the trials. It should be noted that telcos did not issue any statement on the extension of the 5G trials.

Which Telecom Operator Will 5G In India?

It should be noted that Reliance Jio, Airtel, Vodafone-Idea, and MTNL are testing new technologies in the country. These telecom operators are conducting 5G trials with Nokia, Ericsson, Samsung, and more. However, there is no fixed date or month when Indian operators will start providing 5G in the country as trials have not been completed.

5G Spectrum Price In India

The telecom regulator TRAI has suggested Rs. 492 crore per Mhz for 3,300-3,600 Mhz band on a pan India basis.Furthermore, 5G is not in India, but several countries are already providing the same services to their people.
