GNSS-Based Toll Collection System: What Is It?

Nitin Gadkari, has officially announced the GNSS-based toll collection for all state highways in the country. This new system is designed in way that the toll will be deducted from the bank account of the vehicle owners. The toll amount will be decided on the total run the vehicle makes on the specific section of the highways. Just for reference, GNSS stands for Global Navigation Satellite System.

GNSS Toll Testing Started

The test runs for the GNSS-based toll collection system has been started in the country. The same has been revealed by a written statement from the Union Road Transport and Highway Minister Nitin Gadkari to Rajya Sabha. Gadkari has announced that the GNSS-toll collection system has been tested on the Bengaluru-Mysore highway section that is a part of the NH25 in Karnataka. This new module has also been implemented on NH-709’s Panipat-Hisar highway section.

FASTag Banned After GNSS?

FASTag is the current toll collection system that is helping with the traffic management at toll plazas in India. It uses an RFID based toll collection module which requires vehicle to make only a few seconds of stop at the toll stations. However, at times long queues have been reported despite this fast toll deduction method. This is what aspired the government to bring an advanced toll system that will help with smoother traffic flow on highways.

But the government isn’t scrapping off FASTag instantly post the announcement of the GNSS toll system. FASTAg is said to be functional till the GNSS system is up and running entirely across the designated highways. The government will possibly announce a deadline for all the vehicle owners for this transition whose details are expected in the coming months.
