Expected Surrounding Android 15 Developer Preview

Android

The typical cycle for a new Android version begins with the release of the first developer preview. For Android 14, this phase started on February 8, setting a precedent for expectations around Android 15. Despite this, the expected release did not materialize on schedule. However, recent hints suggest that Google might be on the verge of unveiling the first developer preview of Android 15 in the coming days.

Insider Tip: Android 15 Developer Preview Expected Soon

A keen-eyed observation by 9to5Google uncovered a comment by a Google engineer on an AOSP summit page. The comment indicated that Android 15’s “first Developer preview is scheduled for Feb 15,” suggesting a potential imminent release.

Interestingly, the engineer referred to Android 15 as Android V, possibly hinting at its codename “Vanilla Ice Cream.” While this post provides tantalizing clues about the release date, Google has not officially confirmed any details as of now.

Early Access Limited To Pixel Devices

Upon the arrival of the Android 15 Developer Preview 1, it is expected to be initially available on Pixel devices. However, it’s essential to note that this preview is primarily geared towards developers. While owners of supported Pixel phones, such as the Pixel 6 or higher, can install the developer preview, the process has become more complex in recent years. Unlike before, installing preview builds now requires manual flashing of image files, with OTA updates only available when the new version enters the Android Beta Program.

Installing Android 15 Developer Preview

Android Phone

For those comfortable with the installation process, the first Android 15 Developer Preview will be open for installation whenever it becomes available. While it’s likely that Pixel 6 and higher models will be supported, the stable release timeframe of Android 15 doesn’t align with the guaranteed update timeline of the Pixel 5a, which ends in August 2024.

Exciting Features Await Android 15

Anticipation for Android 15’s release is further fueled by the expected introduction of new features. Reports suggest that Android 15 will introduce a new Private Space feature akin to Samsung’s Secure Folder, revive lock screen widgets, and mandate full-screen compatibility for apps. These anticipated features promise to enhance user experience and functionality once Android 15 finally arrives.
