Implementation Of GNSS-based Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) System

GPS

The Road Transport and Highways Minister highlighted the decision to introduce the GNSS-based Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) System initially on selected sections of national highways. Currently, FASTags employ RFID technology for toll payments, where the RFID passive tag on vehicles is linked to customers’ prepaid, savings, or current accounts.

Functionality Of GPS-based Toll Collection System

Gadkari explained that the GPS-based technology will charge motorists based on the exact distance traveled on highways. This system involves toll payments being collected via satellite-based GPS imaging on vehicles, deducting money from bank accounts identified by the vehicle’s number plate. ANPR cameras installed on highways facilitate automatic number plate recognition.

Contrasting FASTags With ANPR Technology

While FASTags enable electronic payment at toll plazas without requiring vehicles to stop, the GPS-based system deducts tolls based on distance measured by ANPR technology, rendering toll plazas obsolete.
